Zekr Glossary

Also known as Quran, Koran and Coran, is the most important religios text for Muslims. It is an Arabic book revealed continuously to the last Prophet - Muhammad (pbuh) - by Allah during a period of 23 years. It is known as the most important miracle of the last prophet. Qur'an is divided into 30 Juzs, and 114 Suras. Every sura has a number of smaller parts called Aya. There may be more or less than a sura in a single juz. A number of ayas, introduce a sura.

Also may be written as Surah, or Soura. There are 114 different chapters in the Quran, each of them is called a Sura. A sura may have one or more subjects within it. Suras are of two type of Makki and Madani.

The smallest part of a sura, which consits of one or more sentences, or even a single word (also known as verse). There is a sura with 286 ayas (Al-Baqarah) and another sura (Al-Kawsar) with 3 Ayas.

Suras sent down to the prophet in Mecca are called Makki (which means related to Mecca).

Suras sent down to the prophet in Medina are called Madani (which means related to Medina).

Quran, is the only sacred writing, which claims to be a miracle. It asserts that no one can make something like a Quran sura at all.

وَإِن كُنتُمْ فِي رَيْبٍ مِّمَّا نَزَّلْنَا عَلَى عَبْدِنَا فَأْتُواْ بِسُورَةٍ مِّن مِّثْلِهِ وَادْعُواْ شُهَدَاءكُم مِّن دُونِ اللّهِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ ﴿البقرة: 23﴾

And when it is said to them: Believe as the people believe they say: Shall we believe as the fools believe? Now surely they themselves are the fools, but they do not know.

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ افْتَرَاهُ قُلْ فَأْتُواْ بِسُورَةٍ مِّثْلِهِ وَادْعُواْ مَنِ اسْتَطَعْتُم مِّن دُونِ اللّهِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ ﴿يونس: 38﴾

Or do they say: He has forged it? Say: Then bring a chapter like this and invite whom you can besides Allah, if you are truthful.

قُل لَّئِنِ اجْتَمَعَتِ الإِنسُ وَالْجِنُّ عَلَى أَن يَأْتُواْ بِمِثْلِ هَذَا الْقُرْآنِ لاَ يَأْتُونَ بِمِثْلِهِ وَلَوْ كَانَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ ظَهِيرًا ﴿الإسراء: 88﴾

Say: If men and jinn should combine together to bring the like of this Quran, they could not bring the like of it, though some of them were aiders of others.
