Sura

Also written as Surah, Soura, and Soora. There are 114 different chapters in the Quran, each of them is called a Sura. A sura may have one or more subjects within it. Suras are of two types: Makki (or Meccan) and Madani (or Medinan), based on the place they are revealed to the Prophet (saww).

The size of suras are not equal through the Quran. Average size (in number of words) is decreasing from the start of the Quran to the end (with exception of sura Al-Fatiha). Sura Al-Baqarah (no. 2) consists of 286 ayas while sura Al-Kawthar (no. 108) has only 3 ayas.
